That golden crest is made of stiff bristle-like feathers, and it fans wider during courtship — when a pair will bow, leap several feet in the air, and toss grass over their heads in a dance they keep performing long after they've bonded for life. Unlike most cranes, they have a hind toe long enough to grip a branch, making them the only cranes that roost in trees. They're the national bird of Uganda, and also endangered: wetland drainage across East Africa has cut the wild population by roughly two-thirds since the 1980s.
