Sea lions swim with their front flippers, rowing like an underwater bird, and use the back ones to steer — which is also what lets them turn those flippers forward and walk on land. Those long whiskers aren't decoration: they detect water disturbance sensitive enough to track a fish's wake through dark or murky water. Listen for the barking, which is how a colony sorts out territory and rank, and how a mother and pup find each other in a crowd of hundreds.
