Herbaceous peonies fill the lower beds while tree peonies hold the upper terrace on woody stems that have been standing for decades. A peony plant can outlive the person who planted it — well-sited clumps go a hundred years without needing to be moved, and some here were divided from stock older than the garden itself. Watch for the ants working the unopened buds; they're after the sugar on the outside and do the flower no harm at all.
